When two rare conditions come together

Leitao Francisca , Quitalo Ana , Carlos Cordeiro Maria , Raimundo Luisa

Introduction: Deficiency of 11-beta hydroxylase (11-HD) accounts for 5% of the causes of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), with an incidence of 1:100,000. The classic form phenotype consists in an excess of androgens and mineralocorticoids, which clinically translates into hypertension and hypokalaemia. In boys, there may be an increase in penis size, early adrenarche, increased growth velocity, and advancing bone age.Clinical case: We present a case...

Prolactinoma – is there a relationship between T2W signal intensity in MRI and response to treatment with dopamine agonists?

Ferreira Ana , Oliveira Guilherme , Bastos Filipa , Carlos Cordeiro Maria , Duarte Julia , Portugal Jorge

Introduction: Prolactinomas are mostly benign tumours usually managed with pharmacological treatment. Some, however, seem to be resistant to dopamine agonists (DA) for unclear reasons. The relationship between T2W signal intensity (T2WSI) and response to treatment with somatostatin analogs is well described in acromegaly patients. Some evidence suggests that prolactinoma’s T2W hypointensity might be related to higher baseline prolactin levels and more resistance to DA.</p...

ACTH-positive diffuse idiopathic neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia (DIPNECH)

Ferreira Ana , Bastos Filipa , Pedro Paula , Lopes Miguel , Carlos Cordeiro Maria , Portugal Jorge

Introduction: DIPNECH is a preinvasive condition in which there is an idiopathic generalised proliferation of pulmonary neuroendocrine cells that can form tumourlets. There are very few cases described of ACTH secretion by these cells causing Cushing’s syndrome, some of them cyclic.Case report: A 41 year-old woman was sent to our Endocrinology outpatient clinic for menstrual disturbance, acne and excessive sweating. She had a recent diagnosis of DIP...

Complications and metabolic control in adults with diabetes aged 16-25 years old

Leitao Francisca , Zambre Sae , Du Lucy , Carlos Cordeiro Maria , Quitalo Ana

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease with increasing incidence worldwide, mostly in younger ages. Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a main complication, with a prevalence of 20-40%, associated with high cardiovascular mortality. Despite the association of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in young adults with rapid progression to DKD, in type 1 diabetes (T1D) this is not well established. Other complications have also a high impact on life quality.<p class="abstext...

Outcomes of gestational diabetes in native and non-native women – a three-year national study

Quitalo Ana , Leitao Francisca , Capitao Ricardo , Manuel Costa Maria , Franco Sara , Carlos Cordeiro Maria , Raimundo Luisa , de Estudo Diabetes e Gravidez Grupo

Introduction: In the last years, we have seen a high migration rate of people to Portugal. Not much is known about diet and lifestyle habits in some of these migrant women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). On the other hand, communication can be a barrier and health care access may be more limited. For this reason, it is important to investigate whether there are differences in outcomes between these two populations, in order to question the need to change our clinical...
